Art & Soul

Art & Soul is a book of poetry written by Anna Springett, and illustrated with 50 original pieces of art in response to the poems by 15 year old Bethia Erin Rose.

The book is divided into three sections of poetry which in turn explore the ideas of Courage, Kindness, and Curiosity, what it means to live with (and sometimes without) these qualities, and how it feels to move towards and embrace each of them.

Anna: Writing a poem is often the only way I can fully express and capture my experience of being human. In a specific moment, or during a particular time, I notice a vague awareness of ‘this is what it’s really like, to be having this experience right now’, a just-noticeable sensation in my belly. And I grab my pen, and I put it to paper, and I start to write. I watch myself from the sidelines, putting onto the page something I was only partially able to connect with in any other way. It can be anything from a light-hearted frivolous feeling to a deep sense of loss or longing. Writing ‘into it’ feels like a relief, clarifying, or even funny. Then there it is, captured, given shape and form and words. Occasionally, the result looks like a poem.  My hope is that the words and poems shared in this book capture something of our shared experience of being human.

Bethia: I view art as a way to express myself - it is an extension of who I am. I love the diversity and freeness of it and how there is always more to create and discover. Ever since I was young I have been surrounded by art, and encouraged to create. The moment I get an idea, I am always excited to try turning it into a reality, even if I have never done anything like it before. I think the most important thing about art is to create whatever inspires you. My work is often inspired by my surroundings - particularly the outdoors; I love finding ways to incorporate nature into my work.

What people have to say about Art & Soul

  • In our modern, busy, often overstuffed lives it can be hard to pause, slow down and smell the roses. This collection of poems did just that for me. The poems in Art & Soul are tributes to the everyday struggles and triumphs of living. Through the intimate language of the poems, I found myself connected to a range of emotions that are often pushed aside. The poems in this collection helped me enter the emotional world through a different door, one where the ears and eyes hear and see the ordinary differently. Before I knew it, I was curled simply gazing into space. That’s what a good poem does – stops you in your tracks and captures your attention. There are poems of all lengths and themes in the collection, so a bit of something for everyone to relate to. My advice to readers of this collection is to dive in, choose a poem, read it aloud and see where this takes you. There are endless creative ways to engage with the poems in Art & Soul. The visual images offer creative stimulus throughout for those of us who are visual learners or in need for a nudge to relax and deepen. Whatever poem speaks to you, you will find yourself moving away from the rational and as I found myself, moving towards possibilities. These poems are a prescription of life dilemmas. So, when you can’t find the words, turn the page and get curious about what a poem might have to offer.

  • This book was born out of a moment of courage and each poem within it is a capturing of the voice of the soul as it navigates this human journey. Anna’s poetry is both deeply personal and universal. I found myself connected to key moments in my own life and gained new perspective on my own moment as I savoured Anna’s words. This is a treasure trove that can also become a tool for reflective practice. The mother-daughter connection brings in that intergenerational well to which ultimately, we all belong and can draw on.

  • A number of Anna’s poems are about grief and loss, and speak eloquently to the myriad emotions, reactions and encounters we all have of bereavement. Her words suggest a deep connection to the cataclysm of grief across a wide variety of differing types of loss. However the beauty of the words ensure that each individual reader will be able to identify and resonate with their own specific and personal experience of loss and see their own reflection therein.
